Australia (3-6 credit hours)

Department of Marketing

·        Open to all majors

·        2 weeks during May/June

·        Earn 3-6 credits in MKTG 452, MKTG 471, MKTG 671 and others (possible via petition)

·        Gain a cross-cultural perspective on the Australian marketplace, with excursions, day trips, and lectures/demonstrations by Aussie experts and RU faculty

·        Explore some of Australia’s top sights—Sydney, Hunter Valley wine region, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, Cairns, Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef

Costa Rica (3 credit hours)- Postponed to Summer 2008

Department of Peace Studies

 

  • Open to all students.
  • PEAC 200: Introduction to Peace Studies.
  • Satisfies General Education in Multicultural and International category.
  • Can also be taken for credit in the Department of Social Work.
  • This study abroad course will give students the opportunity to meet with Central American peace leaders and learn about their international activities, learn about the work of Radio for Peace International and world journalism, dialogue with Costa Rican religious leaders, visit an Ecological University, indigenous peoples, and Costa Rican social workers. This Maymester program will also include visits to Costa Rica’s famous biodiversity rainforests, active volcanoes, tropical mountain ranges, swimming in natural hot springs, and two nights in a jungle resort on the Caribbean coast.

  • The 3 week London program will survey the mass media of the United Kingdom.
  • Expose students to media professionals and organization in the UK, and offer a comparative study of the US and UK media systems.

Ireland/Italy: European Literary Trails (3-6 credit hours)

Department of English

  • Earn 3 credit hours in ENGL 201, ENGL 314 for participating in a three-week summer program in Ireland and Italy.
  • Students visit Dublin, Sligo, and Galway, the literary sites associated with James Joyce, G.B. Shaw, Oscar Wilde, and with W. B. Yeats/ Irish Revival.
  • Other attractions include visits to megalithic sites, museums, and to the monastic site of Glendalough.
  • In Italy, students travel to Tuscany where they stay in Dante’s Florence, visit historical sites associated with Michelangelo and other famous artists of the Italian Renaissance.
  • Day trips to such places as Siena or Pisa and visits to the Uffizi, Palazzo Vecchio, the Academy, the Duomo, Baptistery, Branacci Chapel, or Santa Croce, provide additional learning opportunities.
  • Open to all majors.

  • Open to all majors
  • Summer 2006
  • Prerequisite: ENGL 101/ 102
  • Students can choose either ENGL 203: Readings in American Literature, ENGL 340: Authors in Context, or ENGL 298: Independent Study
  • In Paris students will walk the streets and visit the cafes depicted in Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast
  • In Slovenia students will experience the WWI setting and place that inspired A Farewell to Arms
  • Interaction with the university in Maribor and the University of Graz, Austria, will give a multicultural perspective to this course
  • Visit cultural sites and learn from Slovenian students and professors

Spain (6-15 credit hours)

Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures

  • Prerequisite: Permission by the department chair is required prior to enrollment.
  • Open to all majors.
  • A directed program of travel study designed to augment a student’s knowledge of the language and culture of Spain.
  • Three credit hours of instruction in FORL 309S are delivered by RU faculty. Student may also elect to participate in additional study with a host institution (INST 489G); however maximum credit values are limited to the following.

Four week summer program – maximum of 6 credit hours, including credit from foreign/host institution.

Eight week summer program – maximum of 12 credit hours, including credit from foreign/host institution.

Twelve week summer program – maximum of 18 credit hours, including credit from foreign/host institution.

INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

International Internship Program

  • The program now offers more than 50 internships each semester on an increasingly worldwide basis in the fields of business, the arts, government, communications and social services.
  • This program is open primarily to third and fourth year students from Virginia Institutions.
  • Interns who expect to earn academic credit should be registered for independent study with their home institution.
  • Internship positions are generally unpaid. Students are responsible for their own lodging, transportation, food, medical insurance and other personal expenses.
  • Once abroad, interns undertake a regular 40 hour week with the sponsoring organization for normally a 12 week period.

US Virgin Islands (4 credits)

  • Spring Semester 2006- 4 credits
  • Travel during Spring Break 2007
  • Preference will go to junior and senior biology majors. 
  •  Before the spring break trip to St. John, students will meet weekly to study the habitats and organisms which will be seen on the trip, to learn about environmental issues facing the islands, and to discuss scientific literature relating to tropical biology. 
  • During the trip students will visit historical and cultural sites on St. John as well as visit coral reefs, tropical wet and dry forests, swamps, and salt ponds. 
  • Estimated cost $2000 including airfare, lodging, food, ground transportation, guided trips, snorkeling gear, and fees.
