University, indigenous peoples, and Costa Rican social
workers. This Maymester program will also include visits
to Costa Rica’s famous biodiversity rainforests, active
volcanoes, tropical mountain ranges, swimming in natural
hot springs, and two nights in a jungle resort on the
Caribbean coast.

Ireland/Italy: European Literary Trails
(3-6 credit hours)
Department of English
-
Earn 3 credit hours in ENGL 201, ENGL 314 for participating in a three-week summer program
in Ireland and Italy.
-
Students visit Dublin, Sligo, and Galway, the literary
sites associated with James Joyce, G.B. Shaw, Oscar
Wilde, and with W. B. Yeats/ Irish Revival.
-
Other attractions include visits to megalithic sites,
museums, and to the monastic site of Glendalough.
- In
Italy, students
travel to Tuscany where they stay in Dante’s Florence,
visit historical sites associated with Michelangelo and
other famous artists of the Italian Renaissance.
- Day
trips to such places as Siena or Pisa and visits to the
Uffizi, Palazzo Vecchio, the Academy, the Duomo,
Baptistery, Branacci Chapel, or Santa Croce, provide
additional learning opportunities.

INTERNATIONAL
INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS |

International Internship Program
- The
program now offers more than 50 internships each
semester on an increasingly worldwide basis in the
fields of business, the arts, government, communications
and social services.
-
This program is open primarily to third and fourth year
students from Virginia Institutions.
-
Interns who expect to earn academic credit should be
registered for independent study with their home
institution.
-
Internship positions are generally unpaid. Students are
responsible for their own lodging, transportation, food,
medical insurance and other personal expenses.
-
Once abroad, interns undertake a regular 40 hour week
with the sponsoring organization for normally a 12 week
period.

Before the spring break trip to St. John, students will
meet weekly to study the habitats and organisms which
will be seen on the trip, to learn about environmental
issues facing the islands, and to discuss scientific
literature relating to tropical biology.

During the trip students will visit historical and
cultural sites on St. John as well as visit coral reefs,
tropical wet and dry forests, swamps, and salt ponds.
